Autumn  |   Cultur & tradition in Schladming - Traditions in Styria in Austriak

Festivals, culture & traditions in Schladming and the Dachstein region

Events in the Schladming-Dachstein region

Autumn is the time for tradition and festivals. Hike to one of the alpine huts for the traditional cheese meal of “Steirerkas-Essen” or watch the festively decorated cows on their way back to the valley – the “Almabtrieb”.

Thanksgiving and “Almabtrieb”

At the end of summer we are traditionally thankful for the good harvest and the good summer that made it so. In Ennstal and around Schladming, “Thanksgiving” is celebrated with magnificent wreaths made of ears of corn, as well as the fruit and vegetables that the people are thankful for. In former times, the locals in the mountain region relied solely on the things they could produce for themselves.

With the first snow on the mountain tops, it’s time for the “Almabtrieb”. Gorgeously decorated cows, which spent the summer on the alpine pastures, are guided back to the valley, where they are welcomed with music and celebrations. Afterwards, the animals will spend the winter in their cosy stables.

The traditional “Steirerkas-Roas” race

If you have a traditional afternoon snack in the Schladming-Dachstein region be sure it comes with the regional cheese “Steirerkas”. The cheese is still produced on the alpine meadows in accordance with the old traditions. In autumn the traditional “Steirerkas-Roas” takes place: a nice hike to some of the most beautiful rustic Alm huts, where the “Steirerkas” cheese is made by the dairymaids. Taste the freshly produced cheese with home-made juices, schnapps and other regional delicacies.

Every Friday the farmer’s market takes place in Schladming. Buy fresh food directly from the producers: smoked, air-dried bacon, mushrooms, cheeses, butter, herbs, etc. You will also be able to buy the popular pumpkin seed oil, which is produced by the regional farmers.

Autumn on the mountains has its own special allure. Enjoy wonderful hikes, culture and festivals in the Schladming-Dachstein region, with a no obligation holiday enquiry. The team at the Rohrmooserhof Hotel is looking forward to welcoming you.
